Country

Where Did The Country Go?

There was woodsmoke curling through the air
into a clear blue sky
that was nice
and grandma in her rocking chair
always ready with good advice
there were souls you couldn’t save
and roads you couldn’t pave
now there’s freeways in the air
it’s like a three ring circus
you can get from here to there
but it just might not be worth it
no one knows
tell me...where did the country go?
where did the country go?

Run your fingers back through your hair
splash your face with water
from a mountain stream
lie back in that field right there
good thing you put on your dirty jeans
you could live the golden rule
walk your kids home after school
now it’s too late to cook dinner
so you’ll use the microwave
the tractor’s getting rusty
while you get your MBA
and nothing grows
tell me...where did the country go?
where did the country go?

There were coffee, eggs and home fries
for a dollar and a quarter
now there’s Starbucks and Toys R Us
right on that same corner
You look in your rear view mirror and you see the human race
bumper to bumper instead of face to face
the traffic slows
tell me...where did the country go?
where did the country go?
