This month’s poem:

After dinner we walk up the hill
past the farm
and onto the unpaved road.
we turn around
at the edge of darkness,
just as the fireflies begin their bizarre ritual blinking
a veritable field of useless flashlights
a plea for fruition

The beauty of a New England winter
is that it lasts long enough to convince you
that this silence
these white and grey expanses
are permanent.
then you can be both surprised and grateful for every small change
as if you have not experienced forty or fifty of them in a row

First, the magic of water turning lace into live music
then, the frigid poking of crocus and daffodils and tulips
giving way to the saftig abundance of lilacs, poppies, and peonies
finally, the tiniest strawberries show up
to foreshadow a summer of deserts
and the awareness that
no matter how hard you hike and bike, swim and play,
you will not lose a single pound

Just when you are ready to cry uncle,
to unlock yourself from winter’s embrace
to unearth your short pants and T-shirts,
the miracle of fireflies takes place
proof that the grateful always find more,
and that this particular heaven is a place
that the masses cannot bear to inhabit because
it requires a deep love and appreciation
for delayed gratification
